Unity Park
The Bronx, New York

With outstanding community support, this dilapidated city lot was designed as a new park to include seating areas, a grass stage and amphitheater, botanical study areas for the school children, and a 25’ long fountain representing the chanelized rivers of the Bronx and the fish that once swam there. An existing granite curb, which was placed by the community in the dilapidated lot to connect one of the streets to the other, was put back in its existing location and serves as seating during events taking place on stage. The stage and amphitheater were designed around large existing trees, which were valued by the community. A bluestone retaining seatwall with a large garden behind it forms the backdrop for the stage. When not in use, the stage is a casual grassy area.
