Woodside Park
Queens, New York

This park occupies a busy corner in Queens, sandwiched between the elevated train line and a quieter street. The design mediates the intensity by providing a visual barrier between the elevated line and the quieter street. Three ledge stones, symbolizing a nearby historic ridge, were cut from a field in northern Vermont to create three mounds, which help to separate and unify the two sides of the park. The quieter side of the park has garden seating areas providing a green, peaceful experience for those seeking refuge. The grid of the elevated line is pulled through the park to create walkways, and an information kiosk is designed with the industrial quality of the elevated line.
